Former cager of defunct MBA, 2 others nabbed in Laguna drug raid

MANILA - A former player of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) and two cohorts were arrested early Thursday morning during an illegal drug raid against his house in Barangay Ugong, Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), with the support of the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station and personnel of the Laguna Provincial Police Office, raided the house of Reggie Gutierrez, main target of the operation, at around 6 a.m. Also arrested were Darryl Calma, and Dino Bueno. Authorities said Gutierrez was listed as drug personality in the province. The two were said to be his minions in the illegal drug trade. Gutierrez was a former player of the Laguna Lakers. He was supposed to be drafted a long time ago by a team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) but he reportedly flunked a drug test. According to the initial report of the Laguna Provincial Police’s Intelligence Branch Special Action Team, when the team arrived at Gutierrez’s house, only his pregnant live-in partner was around. While the police were searching for drugs inside the house, they heard a vehicle with three men on board outside the house. The driver panicked and the car crashed into the gutter of the road. A gun was allegedly recovered from Gutierrez’s group. The police said shabu worth about P60,000 and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the group.
