Lawyer: Vhong has already 'won'

MANILA -- Despite a recent court resolution granting the petition for bail of Cedric Lee, Simeon Raz Jr. and Deniece Cornejo in connection with the serious illegal detention case filed against them by Vhong Navarro, the actor-host's lawyer Alma Mallonga maintained that she still has faith in the justice system. Lee and Raz were released from detention last Tuesday while Cornejo got out of jail only last Thursday. Speaking on ANC’s “Headstart” on Tuesday, Mallonga also said that she believes Navarro "has won already." “I would just like to assure that we have faith in the system and also that in the context of a principled life, victory has many forms. For Vhong, for me, what is important is his control of his life, his destiny and more importantly, he has said no to certain things that some people wanted to do to him. He stepped up. He said I will not live my life this way,” she said. “Nobody can tell him or dictate upon him that this is going to be your life. Those shadows are gone. If only for that, in that context, whether he wins or loses, my deep-seated belief is that he has won already,” she added. But Mallonga admitted that she was stunned with the decision of the court, which, according ti her, raises the possibility that Navarro’s detention might even be legal. “I really couldn’t understand that. In order to resolve the petition for bail, it is a core issue, was the detention legal or not? You cannot play blind to the evidence before you,” she said. Mallonga said this is precisely the reason why they filed a motion for reconsideration and a motion for the judge to inhibit “because we don’t think we can trust her anymore.” Contrary to what the accused’s camp insists, Mallonga said she is merely explaining what their next steps would be. “We are not here to dwell on the merits of the case. We are just here to explain that these are the things that we are going to do. We continue to have faith in the system. Secondly, we are here because of unfounded pronouncements on the part of accused that this is a vindication,” she said. Later Tuesday, the Taguig Regional Trial Court (RTC) will hear the motion for the judge to inhibit from the illegal detention case filed by Navarro. Navarro’s camp filed the motion for Taguig RTC Branch 271 Judge Paz Esperanza Cortes to also not rule on the motion for reconsideration granting bail to Lee and several others. The Justice department also questioned Cortes' decision.
