Asian Games: Wushu bets secure medals for Team Philippines
Team Philippines ended its drought for a medal after Filipino wushu bets secured podium finishes in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Daniel Parantac copped a silver medal in the men’s taijiquan event on Tuesday, while Jean Claude Saclag and Francisco Solis assured themselves of at least a bronze medal finish after advancing to the semifinals of the sanda event. Parantac fell just a few points short of the gold after scoring 9.68 points, just .10 away from China’s Chen Zhouli who got 9.78. Nyein Chan Ko Ko bagged the bronze with a total of 9.65 points. Meanwhile, Saclag and Solis dominated their foes in the sanda event. Saclag threw a powerful left hook and a kick to control the second round and prevail over Indonesia’s Hendrik Tarigan, 2-0, in the -60kg category, while Solis also blanked Hong Kong’s Wang Ting, 2-0, in the -56kg class. Their victories assured them of at least a bronze medal in the semifinals. In other results by Filipino athletes, three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Nathaniel Perez bowed out of the fencing competition after losing to Almansoori Majed Sultan Ali of the United Arab Emirates, 15-11, in the Round-of-16. Fellow Filipino fencer Wilfred Richard Curioso also lost to Chen Haiwei of China, 15-5, in the Round-of-16 to end his campaign. Swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi placed third in her qualifying heat for the women’s 100-meter freestyle, but missed out a spot in the eight-swimmer final after finishing just ninth.
