Pomodoro Pizza: A Broke Kid’s Dream Come True

Pomodoro Pizza: A Broke Kid’s Dream Come True
Kapitolyo has been a steadily rising star in the world of independent culinary ventures in the past years. The humble barangay in the heart of Pasig has introduced to us the likes of NavCharlie’sRUBHiyas, and so many more delectable eats. Then, after Thai fusion, burgers, ribs and Filipino comfort food, a little cozy found its way into the bustling neighborhood offering gourmet pizza and pastas at very wallet-friendly prices – a broke kid’s dream come true.
At the corner of San Rafael and Sta. Rosa St., an unassuming trattoria stands in the open air. Open for 7 months now, Pomodoro Pizza has gained a steady following of village folk, walk-ins, employees, CEOs, cross fitters – you name it! Providing gourmet pizza and equally delicious pasta at rock-bottom prices, it’s easy to see why people as far as Antipolo and Parañaque would drive to this hole-in-the-wall treasure.

To start things off, try an aperitif (non-alcoholic, but they do serve San Mig Light, as well). Get a glass of theirHouse Blend Iced Tea (Php 40) or, better yet, get a whole Pitcher to share (Php 99). A sweet blend with a hint of lime hits the spot on a sweltering lunch break.

Gorgeous thin-crust pizza. Crispy outer edges that lead to a juicier interior as you bite continuously into it. Their smokey Tinapa and Garlic Pizza (Php 189 – 12″) is a composition of hand-made dough with their secret pomodoro sauce, tinapa from Bataan, Mozarella, Cheddar, Secret Cheese, topped with basil leaves.

Simple and no-frills, their Basic Pomodoro Pasta (Php 99) is a medley of the sour and tang of a good tomato with a hint of sweet to satiate the chubby Pinoy kid in all of us.

The newest addition to their pasta menu, the Seafood Marinara (Php 132) infuses fresh squid and shrimp deglazed in red wine then simmered slowly in their signature pomodoro sauce.

Don’t let this dish fool you. Their Tuna Fusilli (Php 129) is really worth the drive from Parañaque to Kapitolyo. My parents and daughter loved this dish the most. As for me, I’m still dreaming about it. Fresh tuna (no canned fish here) is simmered in a creamy yet light mixture of Becahamel sauce and pesto, then topped with bits of bell pepper and basil. My advice? Order 2 for yourself. You’re not going to want to share this one.

Buchi? Not. But almost. These Cani-laté balls (Php 99) are made of rice flour stuffed with different kinds of chocolate and rolled in a bed of nuts before serving them to you warm. Not too sweet, this dessert practically caps off the entire meal. Highly recommended for those with an adventurous sweet tooth.

Thanks to this great couple, Ram Morales and Mandy De Guzman, for bringing Pomodoro Pizza to Kapitolyo, and putting a smile on every pocket-pinching, frugal-living, broke college kid, employee, et al.’s face. Salud!
