MANILA, Philippines – Yes, believe it or not, it actually
happened. In fact, no less than Senator Nancy Binay confirmed the story which
was first shared in Bandera’s column of entertainment writer Jobert Sucaldito
late last month
Sucaldito did not specifically mention when the amusing,
albeit embarrassing, episode happened. But it reportedly took place in the Vice
President’s Makati City residence when the senator visited her parents
And here’s how the story goes, according to Sucaldito, from
the recollection of a friend who happens to be in the same house
The vice president reportedly had invited some mayors that
day and visitors came early for breakfast. Nancy, who had just woke up, went to
the kitchen to assist in serving the food, clad in a simple dress
While serving breakfast, one of the visiting mayors who
obviously did not recognize the senator, supposedly called her and asked: “Inday,
pahingi rin ako ng pagkain.” (Inday, please bring me food too.)
Nancy, instead of embarrassing the mayor, gamely replied: “Opo,
Mayor.” (Yes, Mayor.)
While she was on her way to the kitchen, one of the visitors
admonished the mayor saying, “Hala ka pare, si Sen. Nancy Binay ang inutusan
mo.” (You’re in trouble my friend, that was Sen. Binay.)
The official, red-faced from the embarrassing gaffe,
profusely apologized to the senator after she returned from the kitchen with a
plateful of food.
So sorry po, Sen. Nancy. Hindi ko po alam na kayo pala iyon.
Sorry po talaga,” the mayor said. (I’m really sorry, Sen. Nancy. I didn’t
recognize it was you. I’m really sorry.)
But Nancy quickly dismissed the goof with humble and
comforting words. Okay lang po iyon. Bahay namin ito kaya dapat lang po na
pagsilbihan po namin kayo.Hindi po ako senator sa bahay na ito, isa
lang po akong anak at utusan ng tatay ko,” she said. (That’s okay. This is our
house and I am supposed to serve you. Here, I am not a senator, but just a
daughter and an assistant to my father.)
When Sucaldito
pressed for confirmation from Nancy, the neophyte senator recalled the incident
while laughing: “Totoo iyon. Hiyang-hiya nga si mayor sa nangyari pero I told
him he has nothing to worry dahil ganoon talaga ako sa bahay. Kaming
magkakapatid ay utusan ng tatay at nanay namin sa bahay.”
(That’s true, the
mayor was really embarrassed but I told him he has nothing to worry because
that’s how we acted at home. My siblings and I are our parent’s servants.)
Sen. Binay added she was only wearing shorts and a t-shirt
during that day, probably the reason why she was mistaken for an ordinary
househelp.
The veracity of Sucaldito’s story cannot be verified,
especially that he claimed to be a close friend of the senator. But if it were
true, then credit has to be given to Nancy for displaying such kind of humility
and down-to-earth nature, hardly seen in powerful and rich political scions
like her and her siblings.
